Brittany Eilers has spent eighteen years working in the nonprofit sector and has served as an intern, an AmeriCorps member, a program manager and coordinator, and for the last seven years, as a development professional. As Thrive’s Business Partnerships Officer, she developed and implemented their current corporate philanthropic program and was responsible for securing the largest corporate donation in the organization’s history. She expertly manages a portfolio of 150 influential business donors, strategically navigating both for-profit and nonprofit industries to create maximum impact through meticulously crafted initiatives and focused fundraising opportunities. Believing that building relationships and the power of connection are important keys to success, she is the president of a nonprofit networking group, is a part of the Big Sky Chamber of Commerce Membership Committee, and has served as a Leadership Bozeman co-chair. Committed to donating her time, she volunteers as a board member for the Friends of the Bozeman Public Library, as a CAP mentor, and supports several other organizations in the region. She is a birder, a reader, and enjoys exploring Montana with her husband.

Jenifer West worked with First Security Bank in marketing and the emerging of electronic services from 1995 to 2005. She returned to First Security Bank after a 14-year absence working with her husband at their custom residential design firm in Bozeman. As First Security Bank’s Business and Community Development Coordinator, Jenifer manages the bank’s sponsorship and donor request process and coordinates the employee volunteer outreach efforts. Everyone's journey with diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) is different. Organizations are no exception. And while there is no universal road map to build an inclusive and equitable workplace or community, we can still learn from each other's unique journeys. Join us for an engaging and enlightening panel discussion centering the work of some of Gallatin Valley’s nonprofits who are building a more diverse, equitable, accessible, and inclusive community. 

PANELISTS:

Eagle Mount serves individuals with disabilities of all ages, removing barriers to recreation. While it can be said that Eagle Mount is no stranger to DEIA, their formal, staff-wide journey kicked off in 2022 when they hired an outside DEIA consultant. Currently, they are building a staff-led DEIA committee and cultivating DEIA-centered discussions with their board.

Their DEIA goals are strongly centered around accessibility as they are striving to be the best place to work while fulfilling their mission in the most inclusive ways possible. 

Panelist: Pearl Nixon (she/her), Director of Operations and Finance

Montana Conservation Corps hosts several annual programs working with young people from all across the county. Since 2014, they’ve been exploring DEI. Today, they think about DEI work within three broad umbrellas: organizational culture, member service, and community support.

Their DEI work is guided by the core inquiry: How do we ensure that all people -- most especially BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ community members -- experience safety, belonging, and validation at MCC?

Thrive aims to provide local Gallatin Valley families with the resources, tools, and support they need to raise healthy, successful children. However, they began to notice the services they were offering were no longer meeting our community needs. In response, in August of 2021 they hired their first Spanish-speaking Parent Liaison position to better serve our expanding Spanish-speaking families. Since that time, their Spanish programming has continued to grow.

They are moving the needle of cultural awareness in our schools and examining and dismantling the barriers our Spanish-speaking families are facing in our community.

Previous to that role, she was the State of Colorado's Healthy Schools Manager for the national nonprofit Alliance for a Healthier Generation, where she worked with high-needs districts, schools, and communities. Before expanding to Colorado, Ashley worked at Poudre School District, where she helped create, implement, and deliver an integrated and award-winning wellness program. She's also served as a National Account Coordinator, Program Manager, and Specialist for a Fortune 500 Corporate Health and Wellness provider, HealthFitness.

Ashley holds a Master's Degree in Organizational Leadership with a Specialization in Change Management and Innovation from Colorado State University. She also has a Bachelor's Degree in Health and Exercise Science with a Specialization in Health Promotion from Colorado State University. In this session, we'll uncover how to best apply our limited time through the end of the year and beyond, to focus on what matters the most to effectively raise money for our causes: the individual. Effective fundraising revolves around the right person, asking the right person for the right amount at the right time. We’ll dissect who, how, and why we should be laser focused on individual cultivation, stewardship, and solicitation to raise more money for our organization.

About the Speakers:

After leading recreation and conservation programs throughout Maine, northern Minnesota, and Southwest, Kevin assumed the Program Manager position with the Montana Conservation Corps, which ignited his love for the big sky. It was in Billings where Kevin first learned about the mission of Eagle Mount through his involvement as a ski volunteer. Kevin moved to Bozeman in early 2015 when he assumed the executive director position at Family Promise of Gallatin Valley. Through his leadership at Family Promise, Kevin led the organization through significant program and operational expansion, building the organization’s capacity and strengthening its fundraising initiatives. Kevin joined Eagle Mount in Sept 2019 and oversees the organization’s strategic plan, fundraising strategy, and internal operations. Kevin holds a BS in Business Administration from the University of Connecticut and a Masters in Public Administration from Montana State University. Kevin is also a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) and a Fellow in Charitable Estate Planning (FCEP). In 2017, Kevin was named a 20 under 40 recipient by the Bozeman Chronicle, an honor that spotlights southwest Montana’s top young business professionals.

About the Speakers: Beth joined Haven in 2021 with 20+ years of experience in communications, writing, PR, journalism, and communications strategy related to advocacy and fundraising. Of note is her strategic communications work that helped pass a bill to protect Yellowstone National Park from gold mining, national television and print media placements for organizations, and more than a decade of work as a freelance foreign correspondent for national newspapers and magazines. Beth was part of a cross-border team of journalists who won the 2011 Daniel Pearl Global Investigative Journalism Award.

Nathan joined Bridgercare in December of 2021 after years serving in a number of roles in legislative and political communications. At Bridgercare, Nathan drives donor engagement operations and helps to oversee external communications across media. Outside of Bridgercare, Nathan can be found in the mountains or at the movies.

This virtual session will be an introduction into DEI related topics and vocabulary with a specific focus on race and anti-racism as crucial pieces of your DEI work. The nonprofit sector at its core should be an anti-oppressive endeavor. It should be based in empowerment, intersectionality, and equity. It should be aware of and responsive to our history of race and racism and current context. It is crucial that organizations start with race and intersectionally view other systems of oppression within that analysis. I have found that when organizations start with a different focal point, analyses of race and racism are often overlooked and ignored. This is a major barrier to becoming more diverse, inclusive, and equitable. When organizations center race, institutional changes, big and small, can help close the gaps for the groups facing the greatest disparities and simultaneously benefit all people and communities. Focusing on race explicitly and not separately proves to be a powerful tool to create sustainable change.

WHO SHOULD JOIN:

This session will be useful for leaders within an organization who are interested in DEI but would like more language around it and more skills/understanding to help center racial equity. Any interested staff, board members and volunteers from Gallatin County nonprofits are welcome to join.

Volunteer recruitment is tough, and the repercussions of the COVID 19 pandemic have amplified recruitment challenges for organizations across the board. In this session, we will explore three primary volunteer recruitment strategies along with their uses when recruiting a variety of volunteer positions, including board members. In addition, we will discuss the nuances of volunteer recruitment messaging, with a goal of reigniting an interest in supporting the community through service.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Shannon Stober, Jump Start Training & Development Founder, is a nationally recognized trainer and facilitator in the realms of leadership, community building, and volunteerism. Each year she engages hundreds of individuals from a variety of sectors through high-powered workshops, retreats, speaking engagements, and coaching activities. Shannon is also a skilled strategist and consultant, with an extensive background in strategic alignment, change management, and the development of program theory. After finishing her degree in sociology, Shannon completed two terms of service as an AmeriCorps *VISTA and went on to serve as the Statewide Training Officer for the Governor’s Office of Community Service, Program Manager for Montana Campus Compact, and Director of Programs with the Montana Conservation Corps. She is known for her positive energy, strength of character, and humor.

SESSION DESCRIPTION:

This virtual session will highlight practical skills to reduce and avoid burnout. Participants will have the opportunity to experiment with different skills during the workshop to help them identify which ones may work best for their individual needs. The workshop will also offer participants creative ideas for carving out micro moments during the day to recharge. This session will speak to those in the nonprofit world who often find themselves struggling to achieve balance amidst the constant needs of those they serve.

WHO SHOULD JOIN:

This session is appropriate for all nonprofit staff and team members as a way to discover tools for themselves, but also as a way to gain common language around ideas to reduce burnout that can then be used to help one another within an organization going forward.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKER:

Kate Jackson is the owner of Enso Wellbeing Coaching. She is a National Board Certified Coach, having received her Masters in Integrative Health and Wellbeing Coaching from the University of Minnesota. She is also a Certified Narrative Enneagram Teacher. Her work focuses on helping clients build greater self-awareness to empower them to live more meaningful and purposeful lives. Kate's own journey as a two-time cancer survivor taught her the power that self-awareness plays in being able to manage highly stressful and emotional situations. Kate works with individuals, groups and companies in a variety of capacities including supporting mental and emotional wellbeing, using the Enneagram as a tool for improved self-awareness and communication, and offering workshop series on wellbeing and leadership.

In a world where email inboxes are overflowing, is there a way to get your newsletters and emails read? The team at Bridgercare is going to share how they have found their voice and communication style for communication success. They will share how to build donor engagement through a personable e-newsletter – even if the main headline is a cat video! Bridgercare E-News regularly has open rates around 50%, and in this session, they are going to share their unconventional, informal approach to email communications that has led to their high levels of engagement.

WHO SHOULD JOIN

This session is primarily tailored to fundraising and marketing staff – anyone who is responsible for donor/stakeholder-facing communications! That being said, any interested nonprofit staff, board members or volunteer in the Gallatin Valley are welcome to join.

May 27th at 9:00 am– “Charitable Estate Planning from Quick Wins to Complex Gifts” conversation led by Kevin Sylvester of Eagle Mount and Traci Weller of the MSU Alumni Foundation. This session will be in-person in the Bozeman Public Library Community Room.

Description: Leaving charitable bequests in a will is the most popular way for donors to make planned gifts. Yet, they're far from the only way. From simple gifts to complex trusts, there are many different types of planned gifts. Join us as we explore the low hanging fruit in planned giving and why charitable estate planning should matter to your organization.

Speaker Bios: Traci Weller, CFRE, CSPG: Traci Weller is a seasoned philanthropic professional with nearly three decades of experience in the nonprofit sector. She sees philanthropy as a major expression of her life’s mission, in terms of her own personal giving, but also in helping others realize their full philanthropic potential. As Senior Director of Estate, Trust and Gift Planning with the Montana State University Alumni Foundation, she has collaborated with donors and their advisors to design and close a variety of gifts in support of all aspects of MSU’s mission. She is a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE), and in 2014, earned designation as a Certified Specialist in Planned Giving (CSPG) from the American Institute of Philanthropic Studies at California State University, Long Beach. She is a member of the Board of Directors for the Montana Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, and in 2019, received the Outstanding Fundraising Professional Award for the state of Montana from the Association of Fundraising Professionals Montana Chapter and the Montana Nonprofit Association. She balances her career with a healthy dose of mindfulness to reduce stress, and boost her mood, focus and productivity. In her spare time, she enjoys getting outdoors with her husband and two dogs, reading, cooking and meditation.

Kevin Sylvester, CFRE, FCEP: After leading recreation and conservation programs throughout the deep woods of Maine, northern Minnesota, and in the Southwest, Kevin moved to Billings, MT to work with the Montana Conservation Corps, which ignited his love for the big sky. It was in Billings where Kevin first learned about the mission of Eagle Mount through his involvement as a ski volunteer. Kevin moved to Bozeman in early 2015 when he assumed the executive director position at Family Promise of Gallatin Valley. Through his leadership at Family Promise, Kevin led the organization through significant program and operational expansion, building the organization’s capacity and strengthening its fundraising initiatives. Kevin joined Eagle Mount in Sept 2019 and oversees the organization’s strategic plan, fundraising initiatives, and internal operations.

Kevin holds a BS in Business Administration from the University of Connecticut and a Masters in Public Administration from Montana State University. Kevin is also a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) and a Fellow in Charitable Estate Planning (FCEP). In 2017, Kevin was named a 20 under 40 recipient by the Bozeman Chronicle, an honor that spotlights southwest Montana’s top young business professionals.

March 25th – “Community Engagement: Yes you can!” conversation led by Dani Hess of the City of Bozeman and Tanya Andreasen of the One Valley Community Foundation

Description: Description: Yes, "engagement" is a buzz word in our communities right now, but why bother? Our organizations are tackling tough issues and heavy workloads with limited resources. The stakes are high as we seek to build trust, foster inclusivity, and adapt to changing conditions in our community. How can engagement actually benefit your organization and better serve our community?

This session will answer this “question” for nonprofits by outlining the basic principles and benefits of community engagement. We’ll walk through strategies for intentional stakeholder outreach, and some simple tools and techniques for meaningful and effective community engagement.

Learning Objectives:

1. Understand the "Why" behind engagement as well as describe the basic guiding principles and key terms.

2. dentify strategies for stakeholder mapping, choosing the right engagement techniques, and closing the loop with those who provided input

Speaker Bios:  Dani Hess: In her role at the City of Bozeman, Community Engagement Coordinator Dani Hess helps people stay informed and actively participate in their neighborhoods and in city projects. She supports Neighborhood Associations, facilitates collaborative projects with partners like Montana State University, and works to assist staff in outreach and reduce barriers to participation in city projects. Dani also works to address equity and inclusion in Bozeman with a team of staff and community partners to develop the City's first Equity & Inclusion plan. Dani is An MSU graduate in Community Health, learner of Spanish, lover of bicycles, and drinking coffee outside.

Tanya Andreasen: Tanya grew up in Montana, and after many years of living and working in Alaska and Wyoming, has put down a tap root in the Gallatin Valley to raise her two kids. A big believer in the power of neighbors helping neighbors through partnership and discourse, Tanya fills the role of Community Engagement Manager with the technical skills of a certified public engagement specialist and a Master of Public Administration from Montana State University. She puts those beliefs and skills to work throughout Gallatin County by crafting inclusive and effective opportunities for people to participate in decision making that impacts their own lives.

February 25th – “A Ramp Changed the Game: Why Making Organizations More Equitable is Good for Everyone” conversation led by Jonathan Santos Silva of The Liber Institute

Description: Montana is not the most diverse state in the union, so we can ignore equity, diversity, and inclusion, right? Not so fast. Equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts benefit everyone, not just women and People of Color. When done well, providing an inclusive environment for staff can set the stage for innovation and business growth. So what can we do to build more equitable and inclusive organizations? And how might we leverage technology to embrace diverse voices and styles that challenge our preconceptions? Join Jonathan Santos Silva, Founder of The Liber Institute and Chairman of The Bored of Ed podcast, as he explains how answering questions like these has helped the Institute's work supporting leadership capacity in Indigenous communities. Participants will leave with concrete ideas for going beyond the DEI Statement to build sustainable success in our organizations.

January 28th – “Toward Transformative Philanthropy – Elevating Your Major Gifts Practice” conversation led by Jason Smith of Stillwater Strategy Partners.

Description: Thriving organizations grow fastest when they help major donors invest more deeply in their missions and priorities. In this virtual session, participants will learn the fundamentals of major gift development, explore the importance of inclusively developed priorities, and practice a few vital skills with their peers.

While this was originally scheduled to be an in-person course, it will now be virtual and the philanthropist panel portion of the course will be saved for a future in-person event.

December 10th— “Understanding Donors’ Love Languages: How Targeted Communication Can Help You Raise More Money” Conversation led by Hannah Denys of Firebrand Marketing

If you work at a nonprofit organization you are in a relationship with your donors. The question is, is it a good relationship or a bad relationship? A good relationship can mean that you have a strong bond built around trust, mutual respect, and understanding. Your chances of staying together longer increase. And you’re more likely to invest in each other. A bad relationship lacks that deep connection and appreciation. Your days together are probably numbered. And you aren’t likely to invest in each other.

So, how do you know if you’re in a good relationship or a bad relationship? Hannah will walk the audience through a short exercise to help them evaluate their organization’s relationship with donors. Then we’ll narrow our focus and talk about communication, because good communication is one of the keys to a great relationship. Together, we’ll explore some common traps that nonprofits fall into when segmenting and engaging with their donors. Then we’ll talk about how to do it better — how to understand their donors’ love languages. The audience will leave with easy-to-use tips that will help them improve their segmentation and messaging, with the goal of strengthening their relationships with donors and inspiring them to increase their giving.

November 12th – “Tools for Difficult Conversations” conversation led by Shannon Stober of the Verve Exchange

A difficult conversation is one in which the positions and needs of the people involved appear to be in conflict, and are generally associated with emotions running high. Successfully navigating these conversations isn’t just about courage; it’s about awareness, process, and tact. During this session, participants will be introduced to the Four T’s of a difficult conversation, including timing, tone, technique, and truth. Specific topics covered include non-verbal communication, giving and receiving feedback, and engaging in generative dialogue using inquiry and advocacy. At the conclusion of the session participants will have the ability to:

• Exercise congruent communication skills.

• Develop and deliver effective feedback messages.

• Engage in generative dialogue using inquiry and advocacy.

October 22nd – “Performance Management that Performs” conversation led by Mary Hampton of Hampton Resources via Zoom

Performance Management that Performs will focus on two aspects of performance management: Making employee performance reviews productive and meaningful for both the supervisor and employee. How to conduct an effective performance improvement plan when employee performance isn’t up to par.

In a labor market where it’s hard to find good employees, it’s more important than ever to keep the ones you have. Employees are looking for opportunities to learn and grow and incorporating those opportunities into Performance Management is one of the best ways to offer that.

The workshop will cover:

1. Why an accurate job description is the starting point for performance management.

2. The one thing at the root of all performance problems

3. How performance reviews can drive future accomplishment rather than simply reflect on past performance.

4. How to do effective Performance Improvement Plans when an employee’s performance does fall short. * The 4 ‘T’s’ that are essential for an effective Performance Improvement Plan * 2 questions for the manager to ask themselves throughout the process.

September 24th – “Burnout: Are You or Your Staff at Risk?” conversation led by Lori Addicks of the Larkspur Group at the Bozeman Public Library

Description: As we begin to come out of the pandemic and into the new normal, burnout is an important concern to address. 1 in 5 employees is at risk of burnout. We will examine the six causes of burnout, along with strategies for overcoming burnout. Burnout and stress frequently coexist, and neither are good for our health, well-being or productivity. We will explore strategies for managing team overload. The format of this session will be interactive and can be delivered just as effectively as a virtual or in-person experience. We will incorporate a burnout self-assessment, small group discussions and gain tools for support. Nonprofits are especially vulnerable to burnout due to staffing limitations, and high expectations from both the staff and board. Burnout is closely related to turnover which can increase the burnout factor for those who remain in the organization. It's essential to address circumstances that lead to burnout as improving in this area can positively impact retention of staff. Given that there is now a shortage of workforce, this is all the more reason to focus on retention of existing staff.
